Pressure Gauge Terms
– A total absence of pressure,
indicated by zero. On a pressure measure scale, absolute pressure is
typically denoted by the suffix “a” (e.g. psia).
– A pressure measurement unit.
– The air pressure at sea level in standard
weather conditions, which is produced by the atmosphere of the earth.
Atmospheric pressure is approximately 14.7 psia (29.9” Hg).
– A thin-walled elastic tube that is flat and formed
into a circular shape, which straightens in response to increases in
pressure. Bourdon tubes are fixed to a pressure recording or indicating
device such as a gauge.
– The housing of a gauge that protects and supports its measuring
elements and other internal mechanisms.
– A coiled length of pipe, typically used on a dead-ended
steam line, that acts as a water trap to disperse excess heat. Coil siphons
prevent pressure gauges from being exposed to excessive heat transfer.
– The component of a gauge upon which a graduated scale
is printed. The pointer of a dialface indicates a measurement reading.
– The part of the gauge that works with the dial to indicate
the pressure level.
– Modifying the indication of an
adjustable needle with the change being the same over the whole scale.
– The insertion of a plug in the wall of the
gauge that vents when there is an element leak in the case of excess
pressure build-up.
– The highest pressure a gauge can maintain with
no apparent alteration in accuracy.
– Pressure indicated by a gauge,
as referenced to ambient air pressure (atmosphere).
–A periodic pressure swell.
– The highest difference from any two or more successive
indications for identical working conditions and applied pressure.
– A device that limits the flow of fluid between the
pressure element and the source of pressure.
– The part that firmly fixes the window to the case of the
gauge.
– The highest pressure that the pressure element
can hold.
– The markings on the dial of a gauge comprised of gradations,
related numbers and units of measure.
– An apparatus for the reduction of the effect of pressure
variations and surges.
– Also called a “stem,” it is the major supporting
element of the pressure component assembly to which the elastic component
is fixed.
– The alteration of pressure indication that
is caused by the difference of temperature in the components from the
temperature at which they were calibrated.
– Any surface of a gauge that directly contacts the
pressure media.
– A clear component made of glass or plastic closing the
front of the case of a gauge.
